A NIGHT IN THE ALPINE MEADOWS AT TAILLEFER_Oulles
In the summer, the sheep take it easy; they stop all activity as soon as the heat sets in and resume in the evening when temperatures allow. To see how the flock operates, you have to be there very early or very late! That’s why we decided to spend the night at the mountain hut!
À propos : A NIGHT IN THE MIZOEN ALPINE MEADOW
A magical experience in an exceptional alpine setting that brings you up close to the reality of the shepherd’s life: Meet shepherds Francine and Pierre at the Citrière mountain pasture in Mizoen. These family-friendly day hikes, led by a mid-mountain guide, will allow you to explore the beautiful mountain landscapes of the Oisans alpine pastures, discover their flora and fauna and herds, and meet the shepherds.
Departure on Friday morning from BESSE to reach the Refuge du Fay in Mizoen.
After dropping off their belongings at the refuge, hikers assist shepherds Francine and Pierre in tending to the herd and spend time chatting with them.
Overnight stay at the Refuge du Fay, run by Delphine, with half-board to enjoy a convivial evening under the starry sky.
After breakfast, you’ll return to the flock for morning care before the ewes are released.
Descent to Besse > arrival in the middle of the afternoon (approx. 3:00–4:00 p.m.)
One-way duration: approx. 3 hours
One-way distance: approx. 7 km
One-way elevation gain: 750 m
What to bring:
Equipment:
Hiking boots, trekking poles, backpack, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, windbreaker, change of clothes, toiletries, sweater or warm jacket. Optional: binoculars, sleeping bag liner if you have one.
Food:
Picnic lunch on Day 1, snack, picnic lunch on Day 2 (or you can order it at the mountain hut). Water: at least 1.5 liters per day

Starting point: Mizoen / Besse en Oisans
From Mizoen Les Aymes, the path follows the path GR50-54 (Tour du Dauphiné) that leads up to the Refuge des Clots (walkers can also make a detour via the discovery path) : take a break and admire the huge Cascade de la Pisse and the view! Then continue the steep climb up to the plateau and you will see the mountain hut on your left in a bend of the track.
Hikers can also start from Besse en Oisans or Le Chazelet, in both cases following the GR54 path.
Mountain bikers can take the track (about 15 km), which can also be used by sturdy vehicles in dry and clear weather.
